Sunday 28th October
Today a milestone was reached, as both the rolling chassis and the wing
structure passed inspection. John Whelan, my inspector, was very impressed with
the engineering quality of the kit, which is saying something when you consider
how many kits an inspector must see. A tribute to Air Creation and Flylight!
Hours effort today: 2, because I had to go fix my Mum's computer this
afternoon. Always a pleasure, never a chore (honest Mum, I was happy to do it)
 |
This part is a block which clamps the hand-throttle mount in
place on the seat frame, and the manual calls for it to be cutr down to a
depth of 7mm. Bear in mind it's no longer then your thumb, so that's quite
tricky! |
 |
I found the easiest way was to cut through a long side first
as in the previous picture, then cut in from each end as shown here. After
dressing the cut face with a file, you'd never know it wasn't made that
way. |
 |
Here's the finished hand-throttle assembly, without the case
of course. The cut-down block is just to the right of the bottom of the
throttle lever. It has a bolt through it, which bears on the seat frame
and tightens the whole thing up. |
 |
That bit of wire wrapped around the front of the pedal is to
limit the movement, thus acting as strain-relief on the throttle cable. I
cable-tied it to both the pedal and the forks, as I found the looped ends
spring open when the throttle is closed, and the swaging on the cable end
then catches on the pedal preventing full throw.
Note that piece of cable is a required UK modification. |
 |
This splitter box links the hand- and foot-throttle cables,
to the cables which run back to the carbs. The reason it's done this way
is to give the possibility to add a third throttle cable, for a rear-seat
throttle for instructors. |
 |
See those rubber cable protectors? Remember to fit them before
fitting the other ends of the cable to the splitter box. I didn't! |
 |
Here's the seat belt and shoulder harness in place.
Shoulder harnesses for rear-seat passengers are now a legal
requirement, although no bugger's gonna wear them as they limit movement
too much! |
Bummer of the day
Getting an email from Paul Dewhurst telling me what a great day flying he
had! Oh well - not long now! |
