Tuesday October 30th

John Whelan couldn't find the locking wire he was going to let me have, but Paul Dean, CFI at the Frieze Farm strip I'll be flying from, came up trumps for me. He even went to the strip to get it then brought it round to my house. This sport is full of top blokes!

So now I can get the engine mounted, which is going to make it much easier to work on!

Hours effort today: 4

DSCF1021.JPG (66544 bytes) It felt like another milestone today, as I heaved the lump onto the back. Jesus - I've had lawnmowers with bigger engines than this!
DSCF1022.JPG (73286 bytes) Here it is from the other side - still a loose fit with no wire locking or safety straps in place yet.

The two round yellow things are blanking plates on the intake ports. The carbs will go there.

DSCF1023.JPG (59508 bytes) Here's the safety strap, in case the main engine mount bolt lets go. The bolt is also wire locked, and rather neatly too, if I say so myself.
DSCF1024.JPG (30629 bytes) It's not at all obvious how the throttle cables connect to the carbs: you have to unscrew the top and remove the components you see here. The cable then threads through them all, to locate in a hole in the bottom of the piston next to the needle valve.
DSCF1025.JPG (68261 bytes) You can see the hole where the cable comes through, before being pushed over next to the needle to lock in place.

A word of warning: don't forget to unscrew the original brass cable mount from the very top of the carb. The cable supplied with the kit has it's own screw fitting which goes in it's place.

DSCF1026.JPG (71008 bytes) Here's the carbs all mounted up with the throttle cables in place. They had to come off again, because I left those brass bits I mentioned in place, which has the effect of shortening the cable to the point where the throttle won't fully close!

Compressing that spring two pictures ago, when you try and thread the cable through is tricky, to say the least!

DSCF1027.JPG (61686 bytes) Loose fitting the main loom now. Tomorrow, I'll be on the phone to Flylight, as the loom has many more cables in the plugs then are on the engine, and the engine wire colours don't seem to correspond to the wiring diagram.

(Update: If only I'd RTFM'd the phone call would have been unnecessary!)

Bummer of the day

Having to snip off all my nice tidy wire locking, after realising I'd got the washers in the wrong order on the main engine mounts. Also, having to strip the carbs down again because I forgot to take off the brass bits!

Wonder if I'll have a day with nothing to write under this heading?
